Conjunction or subjunctive (lat. conjunctiva ) is a mucous membrane that is made of connective tissue on the surface of which are epithelial cells.
The conjunctiva contains a large number of glands that moisten the eye and make it smooth and easier to move. In the conjunctiva there are several types of cells important for the immune defense of the eye against foreign microorganisms. As the conjunctiva is very well permeated with blood vessels (vascularized), this resistance is additionally enhanced by substances and bodies (cytokines, immunoglobulins and inflammatory cells) that pass from the blood into the conjunctiva and tears and thus additionally protect the eye.
We distinguish between the bulbar conjunctiva ( tunica conjuctivita bulbi ) and the eyelid conjunctiva ( tunica conjuctiva palpebrarum ).
